7 Ways To Lay Your Bed

1. You put your top sheet pattern-up

If you have a patterned top sheet, it's not much use to you pattern-up: The pattern will only be displayed from the back side when you fold it over the duvet, making it looked washed-out. For a truly magazine-ready bed, put your top sheet pattern-down, so it shows up correctly when folded.

2. You skip over hospital corners

You may be tempted to say they don't matter — however you tuck in your sheets will look great, right? Not so fast. Hospital corners are classic for a reason, because they make the entire bed look taut, polished, and elegant. And really, they're not that hard to do. Follow the instructions at Lifehacker.

3. You don't make your bed every morning

We've told you this before: That rumor that your bed needs to "air out"? It's but a myth. Make your bed every morning and after a while, you won't feel like you've properly started your day without tucking in your sheets. (Hint: It's actually easier to start smoothing your sheets while you're in the bed!)

We Recommend
4. You're not ironing your sheets

Yes, it's a pain, but it makes a huge difference in the look and feel of your bed. Certain fabrics don't need ironing (like flannel) but if your sheets are made from linen or cotton, take the time. No one likes to cuddle up with wrinkled sheets.

5. You don't put on your duvet inside-out

Struggling with your duvet? Here's a tip: Turn it inside out, match it up to the end of the comforter, and slide it back on that way. The process can be so much easier.

6. You're not using your duvet ties

Speaking of, if you're lucky enough to have both a duvet with ties and a comforter with slots — use them! It's a brilliant way to keep a mussy duvet in place, even after a full night of tossing and turning.

7. You haven't added any decor

If your bed currently consists solely of sheets, a plain comforter, and a pillow or two, consider upgrading your accessories. A few coordinating throw pillows or blankets can help tie the bed — and the room — together.

10 THINGS EVERY KID'S CLOSET MUST HAVE

Kids grow fast and so do their ever-changing wardrobes. Here, Lisa Adams, founder of LA Closet Design (and closet extraordinaire), tells us the must-have items that will help your kids stay organized from the start and help their closet grow with them.

1. Two (or three) levels of hanging rods.

"Kids are lucky enough to be shorter than adults,"says Adams. "This makes it possible for them to utilize their space more efficiently!" Instead of one row of hanging rods, like most adult closets, they can use two or three. Install multiple rows to give them access to their clothes and create more room.  Is the higher hanging rod out of reach? Utilize it for storing those items you may not want your child to have free access to.

2. Stepping Stool.

Have them pick out a fun stool they love and use it as a fun part of cleaning up. "Kids love climbing up and down stepping stools to access out-of-reach spaces."

3. Color.

"Adding color to a kid's closet will give it personality." Pick a fun hue that your child will love.

4. Hamper.

"Having a hamper makes it easy for a child to keep dirty clothes organized!" Make a game of it from the start and it will become a part of their routine.

5. Wall Hooks.

These help utilize the extra wall space not covered by rods and shelving. Plus, it's "great book bag storage," says Adams.  Added bonus: set aside a special hook for hanging the next day's clothes up.

6. Junk Drawer.

Ok, well not junk, but a drawer for pencils, erasers and miscellaneous school supplies is a must have for every scholarly child!

7. Pull-Down Rods.

This is a great solution for smaller closets. "These [rods] make clothes hung high accessible from the ground with the push of a button!" Not only does this give the child a whole other level of storage without climbing too high, it gives them the responsibility of tidying up or getting dressed without having to ask for your help.

8. A designated spot for shoes.

"Pullout shelves or shoe cubbies make storing children's shoes easy!" Goodbye, digging through seemingly endless bins!

9. Shallow drawers.

"Shallow drawers are much easier to keep organized than deep drawers," and everything is easier to see.

10. Kids' Hangers.

"Some children's clothing falls off hangers made for adults. Simple solution: buy kids hangers that are size appropriate."

10 CHEAP WAYS TO MAKE YOUR KITCHEN LOOK EXPENSIVE

1. Update hardware. Hardware can completely change the look of a piece of furniture and it can do the same for your cabinets. Replace drawer and cabinet pulls for a new unique look that instantly updates your entire space.

2. Paint a lighter color. A light color on the walls and cabinets instantly brightens a space making it look larger and in turn, more expensive. Light colors reflect light and hide a multitude of sins, including those scratches, dings and dents in your old cabinets.

3. Replace Cabinet Doors. Replacing old worn out cabinet doors with new ones or sanding and refinishing your old ones will give your kitchen a sleek new look. Bring in glass, or high-gloss doors for a dose of glam or forgo the doors in some areas and create open shelving to show off your nicest pieces.

4. Change lighting. Chandeliers and pendents are the perfect accessory to not only brighten your kitchen but change the mood of the space. Standard lights that come in most homes and rentals are uniform, change it up and give the most used room in your house some personality or an unexpected element.

5. Use artwork. Artwork is a great way to elevate any room and it will do the same in your kitchen. Don't be afraid to go big and bold—it will give the illusion of a bigger space. Art is also a great option for renters who don't have the freedom to change everything they'd like to.

6. Paint Your Appliances Stainless Steel. Don't have stainless steel appliances? No problem. Use a paint-on stainless steel finish to update your appliances that still work well but are giving your kitchen a dated feel. Be careful, companies make different types if this liquid stainless steel depending on the appliance and its use.

7. Window treatment. Dress up your bare windows to instantly dress up your kitchen.

8. Style your breakfast nook. Add throw pillows, a centerpiece and fresh flowers to give your breakfast spot some style.

9. Replace an old bowl or decorative elements. Change out your fruit bowl with beautiful chinoiserie or a bowl or tray for a subtle change that makes a big difference.

10. Hide small appliances. A no-cost trick! Nothing brings down a space more than clutter. Keep your counter space clear of small appliances like toasters, blenders and coffee pots— They are easy enough to take out when you want to use them.

8 SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BEDROOM LOOK EXPENSIVE

Overfill your throw pillows. There's something so luxurious about plush, overfilled throw pillows, which go a long way in transforming your bedroom from "everyday" to a bonafide retreat that emulates the most sumptuous of hotels.

Add a hanging light fixture. The boob lights have got to go. Replace them with a statement-making hanging light or a glamorous chandelier. No need to spend too much money.

Rethink your nightstand. If you're anything like us, your nightstand is a hodgepodge of essential items: Hand creams, charging cords, half-full glasses of water, quarter-finished novels. It's time to rethink how that's all displayed. Hide some things away in a drawer; display small items in a beautiful tray.

Focus on the statement pieces. A dark wood bed frame; a gorgeous gilded dresser; a velvet arm chair — each bedroom has its own centerpiece, but make sure it's the room's focus. Don't clutter the room with too much furniture, instead letting each piece stand on its own.

We Recommend
Keep the floor empty. Granted, this is more of an organization and cleanliness tip, but don't let that belie its importance: A cluttered bedroom never looks luxurious, so keep the floor clean and orderly — that means no stacks of books and piles of extension cords, either.

Upgrade your hardware. There's no reason to keep the default hardware that came with your dresser and nightstands (unless, of course, it's already visually stunning!). Replacing hardware is a cheap and easy way to upgrade your room, and there are so many ways to personalize the look: Crystal, gemstone, copper, and so many more.

Reorganize your vanity. Just like your nightstand, a cluttered vanity can make your whole bedroom look messy. Now's a good time to buy some makeup organizers, like these inexpensive stackable acrylic chests from The Container Store.

Add greenery. As always, the quickest and easiest way to upgrade your room from "average" to "expensive-looking" is to add some greenery. What form this takes is up to you: A large fern? Small potted plants on your dresser? No matter how, adding a few plants helps a room make the final leap to luxury.
